AUSTRIA / RankWire.AI / – In July 2026, Austria recorded just 244 new first-time asylum applications, representing the lowest monthly figure in ten years. According to the Austrian Interior Ministry, this number decreased by approximately 65% from 697 applications in July 2025. When including both initial and subsequent claims, the total number of asylum applications lodged in July was 840. This trend continued the notable decline seen across the country during the first seven months of 2026, with figures dropping sharply compared to previous years.

Austria records lowest first-time asylum claims in 10 years
Asylum applications in Austria fell 45% year on year during the first seven months of 2026.

From January to July, Austria received 5,743 asylum requests, which is a significant reduction from the 10,442 applications during the same period last year—amounting to roughly 45% less. The monthly figures distinguish between original first-time claims and repeat or subsequent applications, meaning that the 244 applications in July reflect new cases, while the overall total of 840 includes various categories of applications. This differentiation offers a clearer understanding of Austria’s recent asylum situation.

The largest nationality group among asylum seekers in July was Syrian nationals, with 267 asylum applications filed during the month. Most of these applications involved children born in Austria, rather than individuals who had recently entered the country. Austria has maintained restrictions on family reunification in certain asylum cases, and authorities documented 60 related entries in 2026, compared to 853 during the same period in 2025. These figures illustrate another significant year-on-year decrease in this category.

    Departures Surpass First-Time Asylum Claims

Furthermore, the number of departures from Austria has remained substantially higher than the count of initial asylum claims in the first seven months of 2026. By the end of July, a total of 8,856 individuals had left Austria through voluntary departures or enforced removals, with 4,615 being removals and 4,241 voluntary departures. Additionally, Austria executed 392 transfers under the European Union’s Dublin system, which designates responsibility for processing certain asylum applications among member states.

Authorities also reported a marked decline in irregular migration detections along Austria’s eastern border, with police apprehending 339 individuals in Burgenland from January to mid-August 2026. This is significantly lower than the nearly 16,000 apprehensions during the same period in 2023. Austrian officials have continued their cross-border enforcement efforts with neighboring Hungary, notably through Operation Fox, a joint police initiative targeting migrant smuggling and illegal crossings near the shared border.

The July data extends the trend of overall decline

This decline in July followed a lower asylum intake during the first half of 2026, when Austria recorded approximately 5,000 applications. Interior Minister Gerhard Karner highlighted the latest figures as part of the government’s routine migration update. Austria has also continued its voluntary return programs involving Syrian nationals, with 240 Syrians departing voluntarily in July. The comprehensive data set includes asylum claims, removals, voluntary departures, Dublin transfers, and border apprehensions across various reporting categories.

Overall, Austria’s July statistics indicate a broad downward trend across multiple measures compared to previous periods. The number of original first-time asylum applications dropped to 244, marking the lowest monthly figure in a decade, while total asylum applications reached 840 for the month and 5,743 for the January-July period. Border apprehensions in Burgenland remained well below 2023 levels. Collectively, these official statistics offer an updated overview of asylum requests, departures, and irregular migration activities in Austria throughout 2026.
