BRUSSELS, BELGIUM / RankWire.AI / – The European Commission has sanctioned €2.3 million in urgent humanitarian aid aimed at combating cholera across four nations in Africa. The nations benefiting from this support are Nigeria, Cameroon, the Central African Republic, and Chad. This financial aid is designated to bolster treatment facilities, enhance disease monitoring, improve access to safe water, and upgrade sanitation infrastructure. Persistent outbreaks continue to challenge health officials across West and Central Africa, with Nigeria experiencing the most significant surge among these countries, particularly centered around Borno State.

EU channels €2.3 million into Africa cholera response
Cholera response funding targets treatment, clean water, sanitation and disease surveillance.

Nigeria will receive €1.5 million from this emergency fund, which will be used to deploy specialized response teams, provide cholera treatment supplies, and facilitate water purification both at public points and within households. The allocated funds will also strengthen disease surveillance efforts in hard-to-reach communities, along with implementing case management, public education campaigns, and community outreach initiatives. All these measures aim to curb the transmission of cholera and improve access to treatment in areas reporting high infection rates.

Statistics on cholera outbreaks indicate a notable increase in cases reported during 2026. According to the World Health Organization, there were 90,049 cases documented across 18 countries within its African Region by June 28, with 1,528 associated deaths. Nigeria alone accounted for 26,848 cases and 181 fatalities, with 19,887 new cases and 97 deaths recorded in June. Borno State represented over 95% of Nigeria’s reported cases, with Maiduguri, Jere, and Monguno being some of the most affected localities.

Emergency funding boosts outbreak response efforts

The Central African Republic is set to benefit from €500,000 of this aid, which will be directed toward improving patient care, vaccination campaigns, sanitation initiatives, and access to safe water. Additional priorities include enhancing disease detection, community outreach, and safe burial practices where necessary. As of June 28, health data show 386 cholera cases and 31 deaths in the country. These resources will assist local response teams in swiftly identifying new cases and maintaining treatment services throughout the outbreak.

Cameroon is allocated €100,000 to reinforce its response activities within affected communities, covering extra personnel, medicines, treatment units, and oral rehydration points. Up to June 28, the country reported 108 cases and six deaths. Chad will receive €200,000 to improve sanitation, water access, community surveillance, and patient care, reporting 109 cases and three deaths during the same period. The total of these allocations from all four nations sums up to the full €2.3 million emergency package.

Nigeria experiences significant rise in June cholera cases

During June, authorities across Africa documented 27,954 new cholera cases in 12 countries, marking a 95% increase compared to May, along with 284 cholera-related deaths. Nigeria reported the highest number of new cases, followed by the Democratic Republic of the Congo and South Sudan. The outbreak in Nigeria, particularly concentrated in Borno State, has been fueled by conflict, displacement, inadequate sanitation, and seasonal rainfall, adding additional strain to public health systems.

Cholera is characterized by severe diarrhea resulting from ingestion of contaminated food or water containing Vibrio cholerae bacteria, which can quickly cause dehydration if not treated promptly. The EU’s emergency aid addresses immediate needs in the four recipient countries, including expanding treatment capacity, enhancing disease surveillance, supporting vaccination efforts where applicable, improving sanitation, and providing safer water supplies. The aid also promotes direct community engagement in affected areas, reinforcing ongoing efforts to contain and manage the regional cholera outbreak with the €2.3 million package supplementing existing national and humanitarian responses.
