European Union deploys aircraft and crews to combat wildfires across the continent

BRUSSELS, BELGIUM / RankWire.AI / – As wildfires persist across multiple regions of Europe, nations within the continent have intensified collaborative firefighting efforts. Belgium and Spain sought assistance via the EU Civil Protection Mechanism, overwhelmed by fires straining their national resources. In response, aircraft, helicopters, and ground teams were mobilized to join local firefighting units in both countries. Additionally, authorities employed satellite technology to map fire zones, aiding emergency planning efforts throughout various European territories.

Belgium received two rescEU firefighting aircraft provided by Sweden to assist operations in the Hautes Fagnes region. Germany and Norway contributed two helicopters each, while Dutch aircraft also supported the effort. The latest assessment indicates that the fires have consumed over 3,000 hectares. During the response, Belgian emergency personnel, military units, farmers, and international crews coordinated efforts across the impacted zones, with authorities imposing restrictions on roads and water access points used by responders.

By Monday evening, nearly 500 personnel and over 120 vehicles participated in the Belgian firefighting operation. Ground crews focused on accessible areas, while aircraft targeted regions that remained difficult to reach. Farmers assisted by maintaining water supplies for emergency teams operating near the blaze. Residents of Sourbrodt were permitted to return home, whereas some residents of Küchelscheid faced continued access restrictions due to ongoing fire activity.

French firefighters bolster efforts in Spain’s Aragón region

In Aragón, Spain, 104 firefighters along with 36 vehicles from France arrived to reinforce firefighting operations, as nearly 16,000 hectares had already burned in the area when international support reached the scene. The authorities in Aragón responded by placing 14 fire danger zones under red alert on August 18, compared to eight the day before. Officials also highlighted the presence of extremely dry fuels across several central and northern zones, heightening the challenge for crews already battling active fires and monitoring at-risk areas.

Supporting the response, the Copernicus Emergency Management Service provided rapid satellite-based mapping for Belgium, Spain, Greece, Germany, Montenegro, Serbia, Albania, France, and Italy. These maps enable emergency managers to assess burned areas and locate active fire zones efficiently. The European Commission coordinates international aid offers through the civil protection system, facilitating the movement of personnel and equipment across borders when requested by national authorities.

European shared firefighting resources support multiple crises

Ahead of the 2026 wildfire season, Europe had established a joint reserve comprising 22 firefighting aircraft and five helicopters, with 777 firefighters from 14 countries stationed across Cyprus, Greece, Italy, France, Spain, and Portugal. This collaborative system allows nations to request assistance when their own capacities are strained, with emergency coordinators matching such requests with available aircraft, crews, vehicles, and other resources contributed by member countries.

Currently, the European response addresses several separate fire incidents rather than a single cross-border event. Belgium continues to rely on aircraft, helicopters, ground teams, and local logistical support in the Hautes Fagnes, while Spain has integrated French firefighters and vehicles into its efforts in Aragón. Across the continent, emergency services are employing satellite data to monitor affected areas, with about 2.5 times the usual burned area recorded by the end of July for that time of year.
