UN Calls for Urgent Action as DRC Ebola Cases Surpass 6,000 Amid Growing Crisis

NEW YORK / RankWire.AI / – United Nations humanitarian chief Tom Fletcher has appealed to governments and donors to expedite their support for the Ebola response in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, emphasizing that the outbreak has expanded across six provinces and continues to overwhelm health infrastructure. Fletcher emphasized to UN member states that humanitarian teams require quicker funding and dependable access to communities affected by the crisis. This appeal coincides with the authorities managing thousands of infections, widespread displacement, and ongoing insecurity in several regions.

DRC Ebola outbreak tops 6,000 cases amid urgent UN appeal
UN officials urge faster support for the DRC Ebola outbreak response and frontline health teams.

According to the World Health Organization, the outbreak had already surpassed 6,000 confirmed cases by September 1, with nearly 3,000 fatalities. Infections have been reported in sixty health zones across Ituri, North Kivu, South Kivu, Haut-Uélé, Bas-Uélé, and Tshopo. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus described this as the second-largest Ebola outbreak ever recorded and noted that the disease is spreading more rapidly than previous incidents. Since the emergency was declared, Ituri has remained the primary site of transmission.

The initial detection of the outbreak occurred in May 2026, with tests confirming the presence of the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola virus. WHO designated the situation as a public health emergency of international concern. By August 26, officials had confirmed 5,794 cases and 2,786 deaths, with 1,293 recoveries documented in the same update. Response teams are actively testing suspected cases, tracing contacts, administering treatments, and conducting community outreach activities within affected districts.

Conflict and displacement add to the challenges faced by responders

Amidst the ongoing Ebola response, the Democratic Republic of the Congo is also experiencing a broader humanitarian crisis characterized by conflict, displacement, hunger, and malnutrition, with Fletcher stating that nearly 11 million people are in need of humanitarian aid. Violence in eastern regions has severely limited access for medical personnel and relief workers. In response, the United Nations activated an emergency mechanism on June 9, establishing humanitarian hubs in Bunia and Beni to support operations closer to communities impacted by the outbreak.

Healthcare workers are among the most vulnerable groups, with Fletcher reporting that over 40 medical personnel have succumbed to Ebola during this outbreak. Earlier figures from WHO indicated 151 confirmed infections among health and care workers by July 30, including 44 fatalities. To mitigate the spread, health agencies have ramped up infection control measures, clinical training, and protective support, though WHO has also identified ongoing transmission chains that are not yet understood, along with deaths occurring outside of treatment centers.

Funding requirements grow as vaccine research advances

The updated 2026 humanitarian response plan for the Democratic Republic of the Congo calls for a total of $2.1 billion, of which $300 million is designated specifically for Ebola-related efforts. Fletcher urged for larger and more adaptable contributions to effectively support both the outbreak response and the broader humanitarian needs. Separately, WHO has indicated that the government-led six-month Ebola strategy needs $1.3 billion, funding that will be used for surveillance, treatment facilities, laboratories, community engagement, and other public health activities across the affected provinces.

On September 1, WHO also revised its vaccine recommendations as ongoing research seeks to better understand protection against the Bundibugyo strain. The organization stated that current evidence does not confirm whether the licensed Ervebo vaccine offers significant protection against this Ebola species in humans. As a result, vaccination is advised only within research protocols while clinical trials continue. WHO and Africa CDC are actively supporting the Congolese authorities as teams work on case detection, patient treatment, and transmission reduction efforts across the six affected provinces.
